  8.  AB    Even with the low reported number of HIV/AIDS cases in Russia, the
  9.        government agencies often are unable to ensure adequate health education
  10.        and psychological support for people with HIV/AIDS and their families.
  11.        From the moment a person is found HIV-positive and thoughout the course
  12.        of the infection they are left to fend for themselves and to find out
  13.        vital health information from other HIV-positive people. Doctors are
  14.        often reluctant to explain the meaning of test results or to discuss
  15.        treatment options with the patients. A series of 30 in-depth interviews
  16.        were held with HIV-positive individuals at various stages of infection
  17.        to determine their information and educational needs. A number of
  18.        specifically targeted educational brochures were developed on the basis
  19.        of this evaluation. The brochures were pre-tested with focus groups of
  20.        HIV-positive individuals and workshops were held with medical staff of
  21.        HIV-testing sites and AIDS clinic to encourage them to use the brochures
  22.        in educating their patients.
